Salmonella Bacteria in Turkey Stuffing

Each holiday season, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, there are cases of severe illness due to food poisoning caused by improper handling of turkey stuffing. The salmonella bacteria are the culprits. They like to lurk in the middle of incompletely cooked poultry, right where you put the stuffing...READ MORE>>>

How to Roast a Turkey and Other Poultry The Fastest Way

The ritual of cooking turkey used to be a painful and an elaborate process, taking long hours of watching the clock and basting the bird, hoping that with luck, the dinner will not turn out tough and dry.

There is, however, another way to roasting that can give you perfect results in the form of a juicy and tender turkey, taking much less time to cook than our grandmothers took. The same technique can also be applied to roasting chicken, duck, goose, pheasant, or any kind of poultry.

This method is also used in fine restaurants and hotel kitchens where they cannot afford to take as much time as our ancestors did in roasting turkey.

Lessons From Darkness

Darkness in life is like a cocoon to a butterfly. As nature has its painful way of strengthening or developing a butterfly in order to prepare it for the life outside, we as persons gain strength when we struggle through the darkness of a life crisis. Dark times often become our ‘cocoon’ which God uses to strengthen us.

Thanks for the Music, Daddy

My father, just like most of the Filipino dads in the modern age, was a weekend father. He was the typical corporate person who would leave early in the morning and come home at night. Typical you may say. Generally, indeed, the situation is. But the details of his character are the ones that made the greatest influence on what I became today. The moments he spent with us after work and during weekends left a legacy.

From him I learned to love literature, writing, and poetry. He introduced me to the Bible, to Edgar Allan Poe, the Reader’s Digest and even to MAD magazine. He may look strict but he is a man who loves humor. Puns and satire are part of our regular conversations. When he proofreads my written term papers and written works, I remember him saying “before you print your work, make sure you show it to me, so we could laugh at it first, then we do the corrections.” It taught us to accept criticisms in a light-hearted manner.

Though he is a man of few words, he was always appointed as leader in church, in school PTA, in our Village Association, and led the groups with integrity and discipline. He is a man known for his no-nonsense talk and intellect. When he talks everyone listens.

He taught us creativity, resourcefulness and frugality. I needed a jump rope once in grade school. Unfortunately, we lived far from the department stores then and it was already late night when he arrived from work. He got a few pieces of electric wires, 2 pvc pipes, and a few minutes later, I had a jump rope ready to be used for my PE the next day.

He is my biggest influence in my love for music. Because of his broad range of musical taste, I was exposed to classical, sacred, gospel, opera, broadway, jazz, and latin through his LP records that he plays during weekends. One of my most unforgettable dad-and-daughter moment in my life happened when I was 7 years old. I never realized how important that was until 30 years later. When my teacher made me compete in a singing contest, it was dad who taught me the lyrics and melody of ABBA’s Thank You For the Music. He coached me every night until I got it right. He was so patient even though I did not know what I was singing. He believed in me, and trusted I would do it, but my first solo public performance was a flop. Out of stage fright, I forgot my song. I did not quit on music, though. Eventually, years later, I became a musician. This experience was the pivotal point in my life. And I thank dad for what I have become now. I may not have sung the song that time, but I lived its message of music throughout my life. For that, I am forever grateful to my dad.

His greatest and most important influence on us is his example of faith in God. Life may not have been easy most of the time. We even spent some birthdays without cakes and balloons, but never a day or a celebration without prayer. He taught us not to trust solely on our abilities and intellect but to rely on God in everything.

Many would see him as a strict, formal, corporate-type person, but I see him more as an educator and an artist, a family man, but above all, my father is God’s faithful servant. He is not perfect just like everyone else, but as a dad, as mom’s faithful husband, and as a grandfather, he’s just the right one for our family. I love him and am thankful that he is my dad.

Here's a memorable song for you, dad. Happy Father's Day.

Marching to the Beat of My Mother's Heart - My Mother's Day Tribute

We are all our mother's children. While it is true that we have ceased being children, our mothers, especially mine, have not ceased being a mom. Now, that I am a mother myself, I understand and appreciate all the more, the value of motherhood, of discipline, the priceless value of frugality, and patience.

Introspectively surprised, I see myself more as "a brick off the wall." Strange parallelisms are quite obvious now. Unconsciously, I am becoming more like her, the difference is that, she has a kinder heart. I remember as a kid, during the summer season, she would organize Vacation Bible School in our house back in Las Pinas. The house would be filled with children from different age groups. As a young girl, honestly, I never genuinely intended to work with children. Nowadays, our house is a place for children the whole year round. She would prepare snacks for the kids attending VBS back then, I on the other hand prepare snacks and meals during rehearsals, and occasionally during some impromptu gatherings of Clavier Piano School. She loved organizing events in the neighborhood which would require me and my brother to be there to participate, though reluctantly. Truth is, I did not quite understand nor appreciate why she has to organize those activities, but the need was there. Now, I regularly need to organize two piano recitals every year with only three members of the production team... and I thought my mom was a slave driver. LOL

Her love for managing people helped establish her career in managing a chain of department stores, but she eventually chose to be a full-time mother and housewife. It did not stop her from being enterprising, by establishing her business at home. Her patience with people is anything beyond my ability to comprehend. She would most of the time, follow her heart; she would know those who are truly in need and would see the potential in people whom she would give chances to. Her intuition is, short of saying, almost prophetic. I am still far from becoming that-- but I do see the potential in students whom I push and give chances to, I guess that qualifies as similarity.

Mom is not perfect, just like any other human being. We had to deal with her swinging moods like that of a primadonna at times. Her anger coud explode like that of the Pinatubo, as my dad would call it, but it would only be for that moment. She never holds a grudge, she would be frank to speak her mind, but that's it. You would be drinking coffee and laughing again in a little while.

Now that she's in another continent, it does not stop her from being a supportive mother. She would keep in touch to see if everything is OK, she forced herself to learn the internet and computer technology for this purpose. She knows if I'm in emotional (or financial) distress without me saying so. In her weakening body due to a rare condition, she remains to be a woman of strength in many other ways.

I was always been said to be my Dad's junior. In my stern social and communication skills, I believe so. But in matters of the heart, intuition, parenting, and ways of planning my life, I am my Mother's daughter.

She has driven me to become what I am now, and I am very thankful for what she has done. My ultimate goal is to become a full-time mom. I am blessed with a kind of job that enables me to be with my children, but hopefully, in the near future, I would be retiring, and devote more time to enjoy life with them, just like my mom.

For this occasion, I made a gallery of posters with quotes for mothers HERE .

Happy Mother's Day to all moms! I love you, mommy.

Easter Basket Traditions and History

Easter baskets are a symbol of the holiday. What would Easter be without baskets filled to the brim with candy treats such as chocolates and jellybeans, all of these usually in the shape of an egg or a rabbit. In addition, these candies may be hidden in hollow plastic eggs in a variety of colors. If you were lucky, there would be Easter egg hunts where you could search for boiled, colored eggs or the plastic ones filled with chocolates of every conceivable shape and flavor. Have you ever considered where the idea of Easter baskets originated?

Easter as a holiday is the result of many different cultures and religions combined. The history of the Easter basket has a similar lineage. Some of the origins are from ancient pagan customs, some stem from a Judeo Christian background.

Vernal or spring equinox was special time to ancient cultures. They were very dependent on the success of their crops and livestock to live. They celebrated the seasons and prayed to different Gods in the hopes that their fields would be fertile. Spring Equinox is a time when day and night are equal time. This was a signal that the long harsh winter was over and that spring a time of renewal and rebirth was at hand.

Cultures from the Middle East such as the Hebrews, Arabs, Babylonians, and Assyrians had special traditions such as bringing the first seedling of the new crop to the temples to be blessed. This was in the hope that God would be happy and bless their crops that year. One of the most significant connections of Easter to these ancient religions is that the date is based upon astrological signs. Easter occurs on the Sunday after the first full moon following Spring Equinox. This first moon was a sign to farmers to make sure they panted the first seeds of the season.

Easter baskets grew out of the more out of modern traditions and symbology of Christianity. To Christians, Easter represents the resurrection of Christ. Lent is the season that proceeds Easter and lasts for forty six days prior to Easter Sunday. This season of Lent is begun on Fat Tuesday. This is the last time to party before the season of lent. During the Lent season, Christians believe you must give up something and fast until after Easter. The fast can include giving up meat, eggs, and dairy. The custom of having a large Easter supper represents the end of the Lenten fast. In more ancient times, this large feast was brought to the church in large baskets, hence the connection to treats in an Easter baskets today. This basket was blessed by the clergy much like the ancient Hebrews brought their first seedlings to the temple to be blessed.

So what about that Easter grass? This comes from the tradition of Dutch children waiting to deliver eggs on Easter Sunday. They would deposit these eggs in little bird's nests much like the purple, yellow, or green plastic grass nests that can be found in modern Easter Baskets. This Easter as you order a special Easter basket for friends and family, you now know that you are participating in a tradition that been passed down for many thousands of years.

On Prayer and Fasting

Do not bring before God stinted petitions and narrow desires... ask, therefore, after a Godlike fashion, for you are before a great throne... --Charles Spurgeon

The Bible has plenty to say about fasting, and none of it discourages a believer from adding fasting to his or her faith. Biblical fasting means doing without food for a specified or indefinite length of time. Some fasts include going without both food and water. Other fasts give up only solid food while drinking water or other liquids. The prophet Daniel went on an extended fast where he gave up only certain kinds of food and drink while partaking of others. The Lord obviously honors any sincere committed effort in the area of fasting.

When we fast Biblically, according to the fast The LORD has chosen, Isaiah 58 says we can expect the following results:

* Bands of wickedness are broken
* Heavy burdens are lifted
* The oppressed go free
* Health Springs forth speedily
* The glory of the Lord protects us
* The Lord guides us continually

With such incredible benefits associated with fasting, doesn't it stand to reason our enemy, Satan, would mightily oppose God's people in this very vital area of obedience?

Jesus was clear that in the area of deliverance from demonic bondage, some devils will not come out--ever--without both prayer and fasting on the part of those who are praying for those who are in bondage (Matthew 17:21).

Daniel needed to hear from God, desperately, so he made an indefinite commitment to fast until he heard from Him.

There are certain illnesses that are nothing more than demonic strongholds, and deliverance is needed before health can be restored.

Jesus said so himself when the woman touched the hem of his garment. He said, "For 18 years, this daughter of Abraham has been bound by Satan...."

The importance of fasting within the Body of Christ cannot be underestimated.

I have heard (and teach myself) that we should be led of the Lord in our fasting (and we should). All Christians, but especially those who fast, should steep themselves in the Word of God as well.

But there is absolutely no excuse for any believer not to have some sort of regular, committed time of fasting in their life. It is scriptural for our leaders to call the people to a fast.

If we have a born again President, Governor, Senator, State Rep or Mayor, and he or she should call a fast (for our Nation, State, County or City), it would be within the written will of God to cooperate with such efforts to seek the Lord's leadership and protection.

Queen Esther called her people to a 3 day fast--no food or water--before she went in to see the King. I'm sure they prayed for her personal protection as well as favor with the King for the lives of all the Jews. The amazing result of that fast is now history.

It is within the written will of God to cooperate with a godly Pastor or Church leadership that calls the congregation to a fast. We see in scripture where the leadership called the people to fasts.

We should cooperate with our spiritual leadership in this vital area (that is why it is so important that we be very certain we have submitted ourselves to leadership that is truly Spirit filled and Spirit led).

Regular fasting should be a part of every believer's life. Jesus said that after he was gone, his disciples would fast. Every believer is (or should be) his disciple.
We are not all Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors or Teachers, but we are all disciples, and Jesus said that after he was gone, his disciples would fast.
But what about the believer who has a medical condition that makes fasting dangerous. The Word of God says that when we fast, our health springs forth speedily. Because of this promise, these believers, even more so, should find ways to fast.

How about committing to giving up a favorite food or foods for a certain length of time or at specified times? That can usually be done safely even while following a prescribed diet. Partial fasts are scriptural.

As long as the fast stems from a sincere heart, committed to obedience to the Lord, why wouldn't God honor his Word in this respect? The bottom line is, none of us are exempt from fasting, and the incredible spiritual, emotional and physical benefits to both ourselves and others are outlined clearly in the Word of God. We just need to heed the warning in Isaiah 58, and be sure that we are fasting for the right reasons and not for our own self righteousness or glorification.

How to Save Money While Still Drinking Gourmet Coffee

By Lili Rousso

For those who enjoy drinking gourmet coffee, they may be in for a world of hurt with the recession the country is facing. Stopping by popular coffee shops and dropping up to $5 on a latte may very well be a thing of the past for many. But it doesn't have to be that way. There is a way to have your gourmet coffee and drink it, too!

Anyone who has frequented coffee shops knows just how hard it can be on the pocketbook. Having a taste for fine gourmet coffee shouldn't break the bank every week. Yet, for many people, it does just that. So, just how does one go about partaking in great coffee, while not sacrificing a day's pay to do so? It's simple.

The answer lies in becoming a home coffee connoisseur. Taking the power out of the hands of coffee shops and putting it into your own, at home, will help you keep the gourmet coffee you have become accustomed to, while still keeping money in your wallet for other things. Still not convinced? Consider the following:

1. You'll spend less. A lot less. Compare what it costs to stop by a place like Starbuck's every day with how much it costs to create great tasting gourmet coffee at home, and you'll see just how crazy it is to continue pumping extra money into the former. In fact, if you stopped by a coffee shop and bought one drink per day, at $3 that would total $1,080 per year! If you were like many, who buy two per day, you would spend an average of $2,160 per year.

On the flip side, if you purchase a home espresso machine, the average cost per cup is only around 50 cents. Drink two cups a day and your total spent per year would only be $360, which is around an 85 percent savings per year!

2. Keep the quality. Let's face it, if you are like many people you have become accustom to drinking good tasting coffee. Just because times are tight, you shouldn't have to give up this one thing that you really enjoy. Plus, it probably helps define who you are. Right? Being a fine coffee drinker is one of the defining characteristics that some people have.

3. Boost Morale. Being able to keep the little pleasures in life, such as drinking gourmet coffee, helps to keep your morale up. Keeping the morale up is a good way to stay positive and helps fight depression, which many people experience during such economic times. Enjoying a home-made espresso each day may just be the extra boost you need.

4. Increase Alertness. Medical researchers have done a lot of studies involving caffeine. Many believe that it increases mental clarity and helps with alertness. Plus, for those who are cutting gourmet coffee breaks out of their diet, there can be withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches and sluggishness.

5. Share with Others. When you get your coffee from expensive shops you are not in a position to share with friends and family. It would just cost too much to try to do so. But, having a home espresso machine can put you in a position to impress your guests. And once they find out how much money you actually save, they may join you in making the switch to home-brewed gourmet coffee.

6. Keep the Control. When you opt for getting your coffee at gourmet shops like Starbuck's, you have very little control over what you are drinking. Sure, you place an order for a drink, and the length of the name may take a while to memorize, but how much do you really know about the ingredients going into that drink?

When you make gourmet coffee at home, you have all the control. You know what type of coffee you are purchasing, where it comes from, how much went in, etc. You maintain more control over what you are consuming. Plus, as a bonus, you have more control over when you get to have it, no more beating the clock or being left high and dry on the holidays.

Gourmet coffee is good medication for the mind, body and soul. People have been consuming it throughout history and it's one of the most popular beverages throughout the world. However, frequent purchases of it, at gourmet coffee shops, can be troublesome in such economic times.

Purchasing the tools to make it at home, such as buying an espresso machine, will help you be able to still enjoy it, yet stick to your New Year's resolution to save money. During these economic times we can use all the help we can to do both.

Valentine's Day: a Day of Atonement?

images

Valentine's Day has been celebrated for centuries in western culture:

The first recorded association of Valentine's Day with romantic love is in Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese [choose] his make [mate].

Source: Wikipedia

Almost every culture has a day like St. Valentine's Day set aside just for lovers and potential lovers alike. In China it's called The Night of Sevens. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers anybody? In Japan and South Korea it's called White Day. It's even celebrated secretly in Iran! Please don't tell the Imams that I told you!

Today however, Valentine's Day seems to have become a Day of Atonement and reconciliation for many men. What exactly is meant by this? Whatever kind of troubles guys have caused in their relationships, they can always be made better through simple gestures of love. It matters little whether it's greeting cards, roses, or champagne. The fact that guys have actually taken the time to show their wives or their girlfriends that they care, means everything to women across the world.

So, that's it, right? Men can solve their marriage or relationship problems over the course of one day, 24 hours? That's one day out of the 365 and 24 hours out of the 8760 available. When you do the math, it'd probably not enough. Looking at it this way makes me think that us guys need to do much, much more.

It's that easy? All they have to do is give their wives a dozen roses and the problems are solved?

Of course, if it were that simple there probably wouldn't be a need for Valentine's Day, marriage counseling, anti-depressants, separation, annulments, or divorce! The fact that a cold day in February means so much to women, shows how little us guys do during the year to show our love and appreciation. Think about it. If men took the time once a month to tell their wives, their girlfriends, how much they mean to them, how much they love her, and how beautiful she is, there would a lot less need for marriage counseling, separation and divorce.

The fact that birds are not chirping or mating in the middle of February seems of little importance. The cold temperatures probably bring people together even more. The reality is that women just want to know that the men in their lives care for them, love them, and think of them. Yet, it remains a daunting and elusive challenge for most men. Thus resulting in the significance and importance of one sub-zero day in the middle of February. The bottom line it seems is that everyone wants to love and be loved, if only for one day a year.

So I suggest you get out there and give the one your with the attention that they deserve. Send them a card when it's not expected. Send them a singing telegram. Send them flowers. Send them your love. Whatever you do, do it now.

Nobody else does that? Who cares? Your lover chose you because you were different. You were unique. Why not act like it?

What are you waiting for?

The Critical Steps To Dating On A Budget

images

Dating relationships like everything else are not immune to tough economic times. Going out once a week to eat at some upscale restaurant now turns into once every couple of weeks or maybe longer. Buying a gift for your date may have also taken a hit. Sure you would love to get them something nice but one look at the price tag makes you think twice about it.

There is little choice during an economic downturn but to grow thriftier in your finances. You want to do as many nice things for your date as possible but romance without finance is a tough proposition. Not that you want to buy your dating partner’s affection yet the fact of the matter is money at this present time makes the world go round.

Is it a dilemma? If you plan to stop dating on a permanent basis and miser your money like Ebenezer Scrooge the answer is no. Barring that it does require some personal living adjustments.

1.Reprogram Your Habits
You and your date got quite used to those times when you both got paid on the same day and really painted the town. For those brief moments, it seemed like money was no object.

Maybe you still have it like that but a little change in spending habits can only strengthen your finances down the road. It’s difficult because we live in a world that bombards us with 24/7 advertising. As soon as you fight off one temptation, you’re hit with another. Program yourself to curb the impulse buying and fight thru the marketing blitzes.

2. Investigate
There are some people who are the budget kings and queens. It’s almost like they have built in detectors that can sniff out any coupons, sales and everything else when it comes to saving money.

You can do the same thing by understanding it is not a gift that these people have been blessed with but good old fashion hard work. Going out to eat? Play detective and see what establishment is offering an early bird special or quality meal of the day.

What about going to a concert? Check the radio stations to see if you can win some tickets or dig a little further and see if there is a way to get them at a discount. If not this is where reprogramming comes in. Front row center may be ideal but will definitely carry a higher price tag than being seated in the middle or back of the auditorium.

3. Hard Choices
It was a gimmee between you and your dating partner just a short time ago. Concert, dinner, dancing followed by a nightcap and that was just on Tuesdays. Now you just heard from your supervisor that the rumors are true. No you are not going to get laid off but you are not getting a raise either. That makes the third consecutive instance that this has occurred.

The company made a hard choice (unfortunately for you) to cut back. You may have to do the same when it comes to your dating relationship. You love those throw caution to the wind Tuesdays but occasionally it’s going to be in your best interest to stay at home and watch a movie on television or cook a meal together and play a board game.

Have some friends over once in a while and spend the evening in conversation with the TV set off. There are a lot of creative date ideas. The point is you are going to have to tell yourself and your date no from time to time.

None of these things are easy and it can come as a jolt especially if you and your dating partner have never been inclined to worry about finances all that much previously. But these are not ordinary times.

You want your date to understand but more than that you want them to work with you. If the two of you feel strong about each other than being money smart and budget conscious is only going to payoff as you continue to build your relationship.

Inexpensive Valentine's Day Ideas

images
  • With everyone tightening their belts this year, there is no reason that Valentine’s Day needs to suffer. Quite to the contrary, building an evening of romance on a limited budget is a great exercise to show that love romance and intimacy is not tied to your wallet or pocketbook. It’s simply about the two of you spending time together, sharing and having fun.

With everyone’s lives being extremely stressful this year, a great theme for Valentine’s Day is “Teamwork!” Use Valentine’s Day as a reminder of the basics: Whatever situation the economy has put you in, you are a team and can get through it together.

Here are a few tips to begin thinking about for this Valentine’s Day.

  • Lower your expectations.Like many holidays, we seem to build expectations of what would constitute the perfect Valentine’s Day. Anything short of that perfect vision then leaves you feeling unsatisfied. There are many things out of your control, understand that real life will more than likely interfere at some point.
  • Plan with your partner. We all like surprises and to see our partner make the effort to plan something they think we would enjoy. With life being extremely stressful this year, make it a team building exercise and plan it together.
  • Think communication. Last month, we found a store than sells bulk candy, including some of the cheap penny candies we haven’t seen since we were kids. We filled the bag, and plan on eating it on Valentine’s Day, talking about the childhood memories the candy brings back. Similarly, look through childhood pictures, yearbooks or mementos and the memories associated with it. You’ll be surprised at how fulfilling it can be, and how much you can still learn about your partner.
  • Eating Out. Going out to dinner is a Valentine’s Day tradition for many. If it’s a tradition you would like to keep, begin searching your local newspaper now for Valentine’s Day specials. Also search online for coupons and specials. It doesn’t sound sexy or romantic, but also doesn’t leave you with regret the next day for breaking your budget. Planning it ahead gives you the opportunity to scout the best deals plan your budget and not be stressed about it on Valentine’s Day.
  • Eating In If you are planning on staying in, plan a meal you can cook together. A variety of small finger foods is great, since you can cook, nibble and talk all at the same time.
  • No TV, no movies TV and movies allow you to do one thing, watch. Think interaction instead. Ask friends if you can borrow a few board games that you don’t currently own for the evening, so that you have a variety of different to choose from.
  • Mentally prepare With the stresses of daily life, it becomes hard to suddenly unwind and relax. Everyone needs downtime from the business end of life to recharge their batteries. Begin reminding yourself now that you are allowed to take time off from the worries of daily life and enjoy each other’s company.
  • Pick an evening or two before Valentine’s Day to spend some time together. It’s only natural that sitting down and spending time together wil lead to discussions of work, finance and the kids. Planning on time beforehand allows you to purge yourself of those issues, and make Valentine’s Day about the two of you.

Choral Administration Procedures Alphabet

A - Audience
The choir must always keep the nature of the audience in mind when planning for a choral program set. "What is the age, interest, education, culture, musical taste, etc. of the audience group?" It is good to have several sets of repertoire that will cater to different types of audiences.

B - Breathing
It is essential that a choir learns the proper breathing techniques in choral singing. During rehearsal, breathing points should be discussed, especially points in staggered breathing, to result in seamless long melodic lines. Sometimes, breathing exercises are necessary to ensure proper vocal attacks.

C - Commitment
This is a very important quality of each choir member, the conductor included. The level of commitment determines what goals will be achieved and how soon these goals will materialize.

D - Dream
It is not wrong to dream. It gives a sense of hope to a choir or a conductor on what they want to achieve. So dream big and take the necessary steps to achieve this.

E - Eye contact
Perfect entrances, cueing, clear conducting intentions are achieved through eye contact. The choir must be trained, from the onset of the rehearsal up to the performance, to always look at the conductor. The conductor on the other hand must maintain good eye contact with the choir to communicate his intentions effectively, thus it is important that the choir is positioned effectively to keep the conductor in view.

F - Facial Expression
Emphatic performance can be achieved more effectively if the faces of the choir help communicate the message of the music. A beautiful piece of music can be deadened by blank facial expression of the singers.

G - Gestures
Conducting gestures should be very clear from rehearsal to performance. Each gesture made by the conductor is important and means something. As the choir and conductor gels through time, gestures may be lessened but intentions are communicated effectively just the same.

H - Heart
The emotional aspect of each piece must not be neglected after the techniques have been mastered. If the choir feels what they sing, the audience will feel it also.

I - Intonation
Training the choir to listen to his or her own voice to maintain good intonation is one of the first things to be established in order to create a good choral sound. Intonation problems must be addressed and corrected during vocalizes and as soon as pitch mistakes are made during rehearsals so that bad intonation habits will not be formed.

J - Jam
As sticky as a jam spread, the choir members must keep a close bond knowing each other both vocally, musically and personally. It helps ease any anxiety or stiffness caused by unfamiliarity. This way, it will be easier to evoke the affects demanded by the pieces when inhibitions are lessened.

K - Knowledge
A good knowledge of the piece is essential most especially to the conductor before teaching the music to the choir. A thorough research on the performance practice of a period music, language, composer's intent, and message of the piece helps bring out a musically accurate rendition.

L - Leadership
Taking control of a group entails good leadership ability from a conductor. It is up to the conductor's style to determine effective ways to help the choir achieve each rehearsal's goals up to the performance. What is important is that the singers follow the conductor like shepherd to the sheep.

M - Maximize
Maximize each member's abilities and talents by knowing each individual. For sure there are other talents that can be used by the choir apart from singing. Some can be good in marketing a concert, some may be artistic - to help design sets, costumes, or programs, some may have good administrative capabilities, etc. These things add substance to a group aside from musical capability.

N - Note-Reading
Note-reading is an essential skill, though not compulsory, to a choral singer, but should be present in a conductor. With note-reading skill, more pieces can be learned in shorter periods of time, and bulk of rehearsal periods will be devoted to shaping and understanding the music rather teaching and learning by rote.

O - Opportunities
Once the conductor is confident of the choir's sound, he or she should be on the look-out for opportunities for performance, choral workshops, and festivals. Opportunities for performances should be the goal for every piece learned, and it keeps both the conductor and the choir on their toes to make each performance better than the last.

P - Posture
Proper posture is important not only because it helps in proper breathing, good intonation, and good vocal production but it also gives positive physical presentabilty of the choir in general. If good posture is emphasized during rehearsals, from the seating up to the stand-by period before alighting the stage, it comes out naturally, and it carries through up to the exit after the performance. Good posture must be second nature to the choir.

Q - Quality vs. Quantity
Sometimes the conductor must decide whether to choose to get lesser good sounding members or a multitude of average singers. This has often been a debatable issue when dealing with amateur singers. It is a challenge to every conductor to decide on whether to keep committed not-so good singers who are willing to be trained and be developed as against maintaining very good , or even professional, singers who can only commit a limited period of time. Perhaps the answer depends on what end result is expected, or on the urgency of the performance.

R - Rehearsal Techniques
A well-organized rehearsal contributes to a better performance. Details like, folders, pencils, good seats, rehearsal room, tuned piano, arranged pieces, good vocal warm-ups and other things pertaining to rehearsal requirements must never beunderestimated. Every aspect regarding the performance of a piece should be well addressed during rehearsal. That's the best time when a conductor can be in full control.

S - Sectionals
Assigning good section leaders can help the choir achieve rehearsal goals faster. This is essential especially during preparations for concerts when a number of pieces have to be studied within a limited time period.

T - Tact
Sometimes, there will be circumstances that may put the conductor's patience to a test. Even if it takes extra effort, one must practice tact at all times in order to maintain professionalism and to keep the choir's morale intact.

U - Understanding
Apart from understanding the music, there should also be a reasonable amount of understanding towards the members of the choir as persons with feelings. Remember that the instrument is the choir and a conductor deals with beings who encounter different situations in life.

V - Variety/ Versatility
The choir must be prepared to perform in any kind of event; thus, there should be a varied mix of pieces in their repertoire to suit any occasion.

W - Wardrobe
A good investment for a regularly performing and/ or touring choir is a wardrobe that is not only functionally but aesthetically designed. The wardrobe must also project a unique and appealing image for the choir.

X - X-Factor
What makes your choir different from the others? What sets you apart? What is that X-factor that makes audience think you're unforgettable and thus long for more of your performances?

Y - Yakkity-yak less
"Sing more, talk less." Although a conductor has control of the choir's rehearsal time, he must not abuse it with very long naggings or even long, senseless anecdotes. Always keep the rehearsal goals in mind.

Z - Zeal
Wake-up each morning with the energy and passion to bring out the best in each situation. A servant of music lives, breathes, emanates music in every aspect of his daily life. Keep the zeal and it will be a great influence to your choir and to those around you.

The secret of becoming a successful student

Regardless of the instutution they attend, successful students use five steps to set goals:

1. Make a scale of your priorities
You have a list of the things you want to achieve. This may depend on the lifestyle you already have or the one yet to be attained. Unconsciously, you have already set priorities and lived them.

You may have been a laid-back person in certain aspects of your life. Now, choose if you want a contrast from that lifestyle or do measures to be able to maintain what you really are, without sacrificing what you intend to achieve. This is the time you have to be aware and set definite goals

2. Set Specific, measurable, and realistic long-term goals
Saying that you want to "do well" is not enough. Everybody wants that. Define what is "well" or what is "great" or what is "satisfactory." You can start by setting on a grade you want to achieve. Is it 95% or 100%. Remember be realistic and reasonable. If you have never received a general grade higher than 85%, grade of 98% may be unrealistic, albeit admirable, but not impossible.

3. Set short term goals
Long-term goals are impossible to achieve without short-term goals. For example, to achieve a long term goal of a A in biology, the student needed short-term goals. They mught have included: * Completeing all assignments * Attending all classes * Finding a study partner * Completing course readings on time * Studying hard for the mid term and final exams Even though you may have trouble meeting all these short term goals, following through on most of them will help you achieve your long-term aspirations.

4. Set social, personal, and academic goals
Aside from academics, you should also set social and personal goals as well.
Some students would set social goals high on their priority list not minding that they only have four or five years preparation before they enter a lifetime of the "real world."
Some of the social ambitions may include dating, getting along with your roommate, becoming more culturally aware, and learning to feel more comfortable in social situations.

5. Continually strive to meet your goals
Think of of how few people ever achieve thei dream of becoming a CEO of a large corporation, a well respected movie director, or an Olympic champion. Obviously, no one is giving away free tickets to success. However, by prioritizing, by setting realistic long-term goals and by acheiving them through short-term goals, you'll be surprised at how much you can accomplish.

As Les Brown said, "Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner."So know what you want and go for it!

Quotes of Wisdom From John Legend

His words reveal so much of why he makes a difference in the music industry today. For the budding musicians of the present era, let these words inspire you to be visionaries in your own way. In his pursuit to save R&B he writes and interprets his own style of music that the world would want to sing.

"People rap-singing has led to the separation of melody from R&B, which is really unfortunmate. I'm not in the same lane. I'm trying to create something transcendent, something that inspires people."

"I wasn't worried about how I was received commercially. The only way I would be worried is if I didn't believe in the music."

"I travel around the world. I sing in English, but people who don't speak the same language are able to get it, understand it and love it. I believe that if you do the music right it doesn't have to have the boundaries that we place around it."

"dream and let it happen"

"It's not just in the back of my mind. It's pretty forward."

"You have to understand that when you're in the mode of a new artist, you're just trying to prove to people that you belong, that you should have a deal. You have to go in there with confidence saying, yes, I have music that's important, music that's relevant."

The Influence of Asian Art Noveau to Claude Debussy's Arabesque No. One

"Music is a mysterious kind of mathematics, the elements of which are part of eternity. It lives in the movement of water, in the play of the waves in the changing winds; there is nothing more musical than a sunset! For those who look and listen with their hearts, the best theory of evolution is written in a book that musicians rarely read: the book of nature". -- Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy’s works were composed in the era of Art Nouveau -- a term applied to the commercial art that was a protest against the industrialisation of the early 1870s and against the still very ugly machines; it was a time when people were nostalgically remembering workmanship, artistic skill and craftsmanship. On the other hand, Art Nouveau can also be seen as the movement of a whole epoch which embraced all areas of life and art and attempted to lessen the distance between the harmony of plants and animals and mankind. In the visual arts, commercial art and architecture, plant, animal and human motifs prevailed. Houses, furniture and vases were fashioned in the form of plants, there were sea-shell lamps and anthropomorphic chairs. Many different forms of art emphasised the musical element, numerous paintings bore musical titles, and literature cultivated all that was beautiful and rare - right up to the point of exaggerated aestheticism, to the rejection of the natural portrayal and the cultivation of symbols.
We know that whereas Debussy rejected the word impressionism, he did not reject impressions as is evident from this extract from one of his letters: "Collect impressions. Don’t be in a hurry to note them down, for music has an advantage over painting in that it can combine the variations of colour and light into one aspect."
The combining impressions on Art Nouveau concepts may have inspired Debussy to base his Arabesque composition from the designs found in, for example, Arabic art. The movements and curved lines of the motives dissolve into purposeless lines, into ornaments (arabesques). This two-dimensional, ornamental means of portrayal has its counterpart in Asiatic art.
The repetitive patterns in the picture is synonymous to the repetitive musical idea presented in the first few measures which is present throughout the piece. I used an arabesque pattern in a pottery picture, quadruplicated it, and fit those four together by inverting and rotating the images so that they form one whole piece.
The different line designs indicate the different parts of the piece. The flowing musical lines are like the curvy decorative designs. The freedom of form (not to he mistaken for its dissolution) does not indicate a rhapsodic gliding-over from one bar to another or a loose improvisation on a couple of sounds or scraps of melody. To the contrary, everything is most carefully composed; every detail is minutely indicated. Like the intricacies of the arabesque designs in visual art, melodic form can still be seen or heard.
